People of Auroracoin
Auroracoin began with an anonymous creator and has continued through the work of an international community of developers, organizers and volunteers.
Baldur Friggjar Óðinsson
Pseudonymous creator of Auroracoin
Auroracoin was introduced in early 2014 by a creator, or possibly a group of creators, using the name Baldur Friggjar Óðinsson.
The original project set aside half of the planned currency supply for distribution to Icelandic residents through an unprecedented nationwide cryptocurrency airdrop.
The creator eventually withdrew from the project after carrying out the original distribution plan.
Auroracoin history →Myckel Habets
Auroracoin developer
Myckel Habets, also known in the project community as BioMike, has worked on Auroracoin software development and maintenance for many years.
He was identified as a developer when the community team assumed responsibility for Auroracoin in 2015 and has continued contributing to the Core software.
The current official Auroracoin website lists him as a member of the project's volunteer team.
Auroracoin source code →Mikael Hannes
Community and development contributor
Mikael Hannes is a long-time Auroracoin community member and is listed by the official Auroracoin website as a member of the current volunteer team.
He founded Auroracoin101, a Reykjavík-based community resource and open-source project hub, and has described his involvement with Auroracoin as dating from the project's early period.
Auroracoin101 →Martin Jansen
Community, communications and project contributor
Martin Jansen has been associated with Auroracoin's community organization and communications since the community-led project team was established in 2015.
Historical project announcements identified him with marketing and public-relations responsibilities. The official Auroracoin website continues to list him among the project's volunteer team.
Official Auroracoin site →Pétur Árnason
Icelandic Auroracoin community organizer
Pétur Árnason was chairman of the Auraráð Auroracoin Foundation during the community-led period that followed the original airdrop.
He remains connected with the project through Iceland's blockchain community. The Icelandic Blockchain Foundation currently identifies him as leader of its Auroracoin working group.
Icelandic Blockchain Foundation →The Wider Community
Auroracoin has never depended on a single individual. Developers, miners, node operators, merchants, translators and community volunteers in Iceland and abroad have all contributed to keeping the network alive.
Because Auroracoin is open-source software, participation is not limited to a formal organization or membership.
Development project →Community Stewardship
On May 1, 2015, members of the Auroracoin community announced that a new volunteer team had taken responsibility for continued development of the project after the original creator stepped away.
That group included Icelandic organizers and contributors from several other countries. Since then the composition of the team has changed, but Auroracoin has continued as an open-source, volunteer-maintained cryptocurrency rather than as the product of a single company.
Development history and current code can be examined directly in the project's public source repository.
Team membership changes over time. This page distinguishes historical roles from people currently identified by public Auroracoin and Icelandic Blockchain Foundation sources.
